Courthouse and Jail Rocks, Nebraska Panhandle. At twilight, bubble-shaped lenticular clouds boil in the sky signaling a brewing storm cell heading east over Courthouse and Jail Rocks, one of many sandstone monoliths that rise out of the prairie along the North Platte River valley in western Nebraska. Summer home to golden eagles and prairie falcons, such formations were revered by Plains Indians cultures and were the first vertical relief seen for weeks by early pioneers as they traveled the Oregon Trail west in the 1800's.
