A band of bighorn sheep rests on a grassy ledge in the rugged Wildcat Hills. By the early 1900s overhunting, degradation of their habitat, and diseases carried by domestic livestock had eliminated bighorn sheep populations in the Great Plains. Today reintroduction projects are underway, restoring herds and habitats to certain areas of the Plains.
