103 AUTUMN'S PASSING
Crane feather, foxtail and saltwort. Southern Saskatchewan, Canada. Near a saline wetland in the Canadian prairie, a crane feather tinged with rust lies at rest in a bed of foxtail and saltwort painted red by autumn. Myriad feathers left behind on the southern prairies of Saskatchewan and Alberta speak to these prairies as critical fall staging areas for sandhill cranes that migrate between Arctic and subartic breeding grounds and the arid Southwest. The cranes feed primarily in freshly harvested grain fields by day, and seek sanctuary in protected wetlands by night.
