Custer State Park, South Dakota. A pair of mule deer bucks crest a windswept prairie ridgeline at sunset in early October. Most easily distinguished from the whitetail deer by their large, mule-like ears, mule deer are prevalent throughout the West, generally found in the more arid habitats and higher elevations of the western Great Plains.
