063 SANDHILLS SENTRY - SWAINSONS HAWK
Swainsons Hawk- Nebraska Sandhills. The June sky blushes at dawn as a Swainsons hawk sits in sillhouette atop a fence post, scanning the prairie for its first meal of the day. Swainsons hawks are raptors of the prairie and can be found in most grasslands of the American West. Often, their nests can be found in lone cottonwood trees surrounded by a sea of grass. Swainson's hawks are also long-distance migrators, migrating in huge numbers as far south as Central and South America in the winter. There, decreasing habitat, dwindling prey species and the affects of agricultural chemicals are taking their toll on this beautiful species population.
