050 AUTUMN HAIKU - ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
Orange-crowned warbler - Custer State Park, South Dakota. Like an ornament on a Christmas tree, an orange-crowned warbler pauses during its fall migration in order to gorge on the fruit of a hawthorn shortly before an early October snowstorm. Orange-crowned warblers and a host of other songbird species migrate through the Black Hills and surrounding prairies each fall. They seek shelter in the quiet, tree-protected stream valleys where the hills meet the prairie, seeking food before cold temperatures and early snows push them further south.
