Nebraska Sandhills, near Walgren Lake.

Hybridized northern flicker with markings for both subspecies on its head (red head marking and red/black mustache).

Uncommon, hybridization of two sub species of the Northern Flicker, yellow shafted and red shafted flicker, occurs only in middle of Great Plains where ranges overlap.

Several bird species hybridize along this line, roughly following the 100th Meridian.

Northern flickers nest in trees but forage in grasslands, primarily on insects, and especially ants.
