Pawnee Prairie Wildlife Management Area, Pawnee County, Nebraska. The thick-spike gayfeather, also called the prairie blazing star, tall blazing star and Kansas Gayfeather, is a purple flower that blooms in mid to late summer. This lovely plant prefers moist but well drained locations to grow. The flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and of course, humans.
