012 SANDHILLS SUNRISE
Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, Nebraska Sandhills. The rising sun finds a break in the clouds on Dewey Lake in early October. Dewey Lake is one of hundreds of natural lakes in the sandhills fed by a vast underground aquifer, the Ogallala Aquifer. The aquifer stretches underneath roughly 19,000 square miles of stabilized sand dunes in north central Nebraska, the largest region of its kind in the entire western hemisphere.
