High Plains, Nebraska. Kimball county along the NE/CO border just north of Pawnee National Grassland.

Mountain plover (federal endangered species list- IUCN Red List) on nest with hours old chick in fallow wheat field. Most of shortgrass prairie plowed up in these areas so plovers have shifted over to nesting in fallow fields, which often turn to the plow during nesting season.

Since Mountain plovers prefer open or close to bare ground grasslands to nest, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) pays farmers good money to locate nests in their fields before plowing. The nests are flagged and farmers plow around them.
