Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, Nebraska. Gray trunks of a ponderosa pine forest anchor the October colors of the Niobrara River valley hillside. Ponderosa pines grow in some of the higher elevations of the High Plains. They can grow to hundreds of years old, and their seeds only germinate with fire.
